I recently read that only two percent of American adults have parents that are still alive and married to each another. I’m one of the fortunate two percent, but my children will not be. Divorce has had an impact, in some way or another, on most of our lives, but what does it really mean?

The American Heritage dictionary defines the noun divorce as:
1. The legal dissolution of a marriage. 2. A complete or radical separation of things closely connected, from the verb “vorced.”

The Cali Four – For the Kids
Disaster Relief Team

Our group consists of four individuals, in conjunction with corporate and small business partners, who will be striking out from Sacramento next Wednesday, September 7th for Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi to assist in the post-Katrina relief effort.

We have been in contact with the local Red Cross, and are in the process of getting accepted into their system. To date, we have secured a 5-ton flatbed truck that is capable of transporting the 2500-gallon potable water tank, two ice makers, various dry good and foodstuffs, and miscellaneous medical supplies.

We will have a truck set up at the Sam’s Club @ East Bidwell & 50 in Folsom, and another at Goore’s Children’s Specialties @ Fulton & Marconi in Sacramento, where we will be accepting donations. Please limit your offerings to non-perishable and easily transported goods. There are lists of suggested goods posted on line that you can reference if needed.

One concern we have is to insure we have the means to transport the sheer volume of goods already being committed. Based on the outcome of this weekend’s collection effort, we anticipate potentially needing to solicit a long haul partner to assist with the trucking / shipping requirements. If you have means to offer this level of support, it would, of course, be greatly appreciated.

On behalf of the four of us and our partners, and most importantly, the people we are about to serve, we thank you.

Tradition: Father’s Day – Hand in Hand Photo

Father’s Day is the perfect time to take a photo of Dad’s hand with your children’s hands resting in his palm. Over the years, these photos will record the growth and change in your children, and they will hold memories that dad will cherish forever. Take this same photo every year and keep them in your Father’s Day photo book. Your children will look forward to the annual photo and Father’s Day will not be complete until the film has been developed.

Tradition: Father’s Day – Frequent Father Card

Make a credit card for Dad that will soon become the most valuable card in his wallet. This is called the DATES WITH DAD card. List every month of the year on the backside, and use it to schedule and record one special outing with Dad every month. Each child will have to present his/her own card to Dad as a Father’s Day Gift if they want to reserve that special time together. Dates with Dad could be whatever the two of them want to do together. An all day fishing trip, an afternoon at the movies, help on a special hobby or a special Breakfast. The important thing is that they plan time together, just the two of them. Dad can keep this special card in his wallet to remind him of the most important appointments he has scheduled that month. Once his DATES WITH DAD card has expired, he has a year full of memories and a wonderful keepsake that will bring those memories back once his children are grown. He might even want to continue this monthly tradition forever.

Local Youth to “Serve Folsom” at 4th Annual Leadership Event

Folsom, California – The week of June 12 - 19, 2005, 25 area teenagers will leave behind the lives they know to live and work together in the 4th Annual Serve Folsom event. Some of the youth involved will come from privileged backgrounds – sacrificing the comfort of their beds, their televisions, and the pool in the backyard. Others will come from low-income backgrounds, and may not even have a permanent place to call home. But for one week, all socioeconomic barriers will be torn down as youth from uncommon backgrounds unify in a unique demonstration of leadership, giving, and community spirit.
