ABOUT US
The Triad of Health is a philosophical axiom of applied kinesiology. The “triad”, or triangle, is composed of three sides – the structural side, the chemical side and the mental side. It is believed that the cause of most, if not all, human afflictions can be traced to aberrance in one or more of these categories:
-
“Structural” refers to the bodily frame that supports us (including muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments and so forth) which can be affected by trauma – both recent and ancient, macro and micro – as well as lack of proper exercise and other factors.
-
“Chemical” refers to the body’s basic physiological and biochemical workings (including hormonal balance and the utilization of nutrients) and can be altered by the ingestion of environmental toxins, improper nutrition, drugs, etc.
-
“Mental” refers to the third leg of the triangle and recognizes that emotional and psychological stressors can be contributing or even primary factors in the manifestation of a particular condition.
There is a great deal of interaction between the three legs of the triad. Chemistry can affect structure, such as an anti-inflammatory pharmaceutical (a chemical compound) being used to ease the pain of a twisted ankle (a structural issue). Similarly, a jog in the park (beneficial to the human structure) can often help one to regain mental focus and contribute to psychological wellbeing, and so forth. In recognizing the fundamental interplay of these myriad factors, we strive to practice in a truly holistic fashion.
APPLIED KINESIOLOGY
Applied kinesiology (AK) is a method of assessment based on the clinical research of George J. Goodheart, Jr., DC, DIBAK and employs manual muscle testing as an extension of functional neurology. It serves to assist doctors in refining their physical exam in order to direct treatment in the most appropriate and efficient fashion, especially when numerous treatment options are available. It draws together the core elements of seemingly disparate disciplines, including but not limited to, osteopathic and chiropractic adjustments, craniosacral manipulation, acupuncture meridian therapy, myofascial techniques, clinical nutrition and more. AK, when combined with standard diagnostic methods, represents a non-invasive system of evaluating function that is unique in the healing arts and has become a dynamic movement in healthcare in its relatively short existence.
Other “muscle testing” and “kinesiology” methodologies in existence are practiced by some clinicians and lay healers and have inaccurately been likened to applied kinesiology by unenlightened observers. However, professional applied kinesiology, as taught by the International College of Applied Kinesiology (www.icak.com), is practiced only by healthcare professionals licensed to diagnose.
CHIROPRACTIC NEUROLOGY
The chiropractic profession, since its inception, has always had its roots in clinical neurology. Modern chiropractic neurology, pioneered by Frederick (Ted) Carrick, DC, PhD, is defined as the field of functional neurology that engages the internal and external environments of the individual in a structured and targeted approach to effect positive changes in the nervous system and consequent physiology and behavior.
Adjustments and other non-invasive modalities can affect the nervous system in a profound way. Through history and physical examination procedures, the chiropractic neurologist attempts to determine which areas of the nervous system are not working harmoniously with the whole. In doing so, the most appropriate treatment options can be employed. Continued monitoring, via standard and enhanced neurological exam procedures, provides the clinician with dynamic feedback on the efficacy of the treatments.
ABOUT Dr. CASO
Dr. Marcello Caso obtained his Doctor of Chiropractic and Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from the National University of Health Sciences, after completing undergraduate studies in psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a Board Certified Diplomate of the International College of Applied Kinesiology and a Board Certified Teacher of said organization, as well as a Board Certified Diplomate in Chiropractic Neurology.
In nearly a decade of clinical activity, Dr. Caso has practiced in Chicago (1998-1999), Italy (1999-2001, 2003-2007) and the Sacramento area (2001-2003 and at present). He has collaborated with the professional athletes of the United States Karate Team, the Chicago Lions Rugby Team, the Celana Basketball Team (Italy) and the prestigious A.C. Milan Soccer Team (Italy). Additionally, he has served as Assistant Editor of The International Journal of Applied Kinesiology and as a consultant for the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential, in dealing with the rehabilitation of brain-injured children. He has also published numerous papers and taught at professional post-graduate events for medical doctors, osteopathic physicians, dentists, chiropractors and other clinicians in both the United States and Europe.
"Man possesses a potential for recovery through the innate intelligence of the human structure. This recovery potential with which he is endowed merely waits for your hand, your heart and your mind to bring it to potential being and allow the recovery to take place, which is man's natural heritage. This benefits man, it benefits you and it benefits our profession. Do it, do it with knowledge, do it with physiologic facts, do it because it has to be done, and we as a profession can do it so effectively."
