Bicycle Planet
"Bicycle Planet has great service when Keith is there, unfortunately even Superman needs a day off every now and again. On those days, you'll find that they have become victims of their own success. They've simply to much service business now to adequately keep up with their long time customers. The newer guy on the sales floor don't know the models of bikes available from the few manufacturers that Bicycle Planet offers. We've purchased three bikes from the shop dating back to their earliest days in their previous location in the Safeway plaza. Over the past couple of months there have been several instances in which it's been obvious that they've reached the point of overload. Gone are the days of first names or even recognizing customers who've been with them from their humble beginnings. To put it bluntly, things are getting missed and while they're pumping the work out, the quality of that work is becoming suspect. Case in point, on one bike purchased there just a little over a year ago, the handlebars did a 180 degree rotation while the bike was being ridden within the first fifteen minutes of use after the sale. All of the reflectors fell off within two days of use. The rear wheel chain guard was never secured and broke off in about the same time frame. The brakes on the bike we're so loose at the time of sale, that the bike wasn't capable of being stopped from a rolling speed of around fifteen miles per hour. These are all set up issues that ring of hastiness. Beyond that here a couple of more instances that typify the type of downward spiral Bicycle Planets seems to currently be in. This past summer my wife was trying to find her next bike. This would've been our fourth bike purchases from Bicycle Planet. In two visits, no one there would take the time to take a bike off the shelf racks to show her, let alone role one to the front door for her to try out in the parking lot. We ended up driving to several other Giant dealers, even driving to one out of state, trying to track down the bike model and size that she thought would be right. We finally located the exact bicycle she was after at a bike shop in another state and after she took a test ride on it, the owner of that shop offered a fairly substantial discount to her on that bike. Yet we decided to come back to Bicycle Planet to order it ( at the full retail price ) from them. It was our way of continuing to support our local bike shop. A couple of days past before I drove over to Bicycle Planet to " attempt " to order the bike for her and I ended up dealing with a mature fellow who I hadn't dealt with or seen there before. His response to my inquiry about ordering the bike was to say that he wasn't familiar with that bike model. That was it. He just stood their like a lawn jockey for a moment or two and then shuffled away. Never asking if he could look it up or find out if there was one available from their vendor, or even to go ask another Bicycle Planet associate if they could help him out, nothing - nada. Just dead air. A couple of weeks later, I stopped by to have a tube replaced on one of the bikes we'd purchased their ( in the past, they always made time to replace tubes on bikes they sold, while their customers waited ). When I got the bike home, I found the youngster who mounted the tire hadn't remotely come close to seating the tire properly, it was way out of round. No big deal I thought, they're backed up and trying to pump work out as best they can and so I deflated and reseated it myself. Yet in retrospect, that sort of miscue is a big deal if you don't catch it and a lot of novice riders wouldn't catch it, until they're out and about on their bikes. On my last visit, I stopped in on a weekday to have a couple of tubes replaced ( again on a bike purchase there ), with hopes that they might have a pair of fairly common tires in stock too. As is becoming more and more common at Bicycle Planet, the tires were out of stock, it seems that nearly everything we every want is. So I resigned myself to simply have them pop in a couple of tubes and I'd be on my way. The clincher for me was that they had me fill out a work order for my tube replacements and a gave me a five and half hour lead time for the replacement. Which is by way of saying, if you've got a life, you're bike will be ready tomorrow. Game over ! We've purchased three bikes, helmets, riding clothing, untold accessories from pumps to water bottles, upgraded parts and service. Lived with some pretty disgusting and dangerous new bike set up failures, all the time keeping a smile on our faces and gleefully paying our tabs. We've gone out of our way to locate product in another state, that we tried to purchase from Bicycle Planet. To be fair, as I was leaving with my bike today my frustration must have been written all over my face, the gent in the office finally unseated himself long enough to try to come to the rescue with an offer to replace the tube himself. Interesting that he couldn't have disengaged himself from his chair before a problem arose. None the less, enough is enough. In any case, there is no shortage of bike shops in Folsom and the surrounding area, most will do on the spot, while you wait tire repairs for anyone who comes in. I still wish Bicycle Planet the best of futures, they were once our favorite, friendly bike shop."

Service & Sales
"My experience with bicycle planet was uneventful from knowledgeable experienced staff. Then they distinguished themselves when I received my folding travel Bike Friday. I had ordered it directly from the manufacturer. One of the brakes was sticking, so I took it to Bicycle Planet. The owner, Keith, immediately put it on the repair stand diagnosed the problem, trued the room, adjusted the brake and showed my how to adjust it. He would not take any money even when I told him that Bike Friday would pay for it. They are now at the top of my list. Their new location (1/2 block to the north of where they were) is a beautiful spacious shop with more inventory and laid out nicely with lots of windows and high ceilings. It has a wonderful feel. They are still knowledgeable, helpful and I have learned of their passion for cycling and their commitment the planet and the local community. Their prices are also reasonable. I like supporting my Local Bike Store (LBS). "
